Introduction

Keanu Reeves is set to return as John Wick in an unexpected new format. Lionsgate has greenlit an animated prequel that will explore the formative moments of the iconic assassin’s journey. The project marks a significant expansion of the John Wick universe into anime, a medium the franchise’s director has long admired.

What Happened

Lionsgate officially announced an animated John Wick film, with Keanu Reeves attached to produce and lend his voice to the title character. Shannon Tindle, known for his work on Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings, is directing from a script co-written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who previously worked on Marvel’s Eternals. The production team also includes Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski, and Point Grey Productions, co-founded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The film will depict the 'Impossible Task' — the night Wick eliminated his rivals to sever ties with the High Table.

Why This Matters

The move into anime opens new possibilities for visual storytelling and world-building in the John Wick franchise. Stahelski has noted that anime’s dynamic style is a natural fit for the series’ choreographed combat, and the prequel format allows the team to dig deeper into Wick’s origins without being constrained by previous film continuity. Fans can expect a fresh visual approach that could redefine how the franchise expands moving forward.
